In this era, the whole world highly considers the betterment of the natural environment. Therefore, we also have a responsibility to protect this earth, and we able to achieve this by doing small things such as composting.
In our day to day life, we cast many food waste and recyclable waste through our kitchen. But the truth is this waste can be invested for our future and it generates more benefits at a low cost. This investment can be named as composting. Simply composting kitchen waste is a natural process of decomposition and recycling of organic material in the presence of air and water by using micro-organism and small insects.
The important thing is to create compost, composting organisms require four conditions. They are Carbon that comes from brown organic matter, Nitrogen that comes from fruit and vegetable waste, Oxygen which comes from air and water in the right amount.
In this process, you need to know, what are the right kinds of kitchen waste and other materials that use to create compost.
|Greens (High in Nitrogen)||Brown (High in Carbon)|
|Food Scraps, Food Waste||Dry Leaves, Garden Shrubs|
|Discarded Vegetables, Vegetable Peels||Saw Dust, Wood Chips|
|Tea Bags, Coffee Grounds||Paddy Straw|
|Pruning, Cut Flowers||Paper Napkins, Tissue Papers, Newspapers, Shredded Papers and Cardboards|
|Egg Shells, Bread and Citrus etc.||Small pieces of barks|
To create a healthy compost pile is to maintain a working balance between Carbon and Nitrogen. However meat, bones or other animal products fish products, dairy, animal waste, any kind of grease or oils, and plastics are some things to keep out of your composter. Because they cause to slow down the decomposition process of all other good ingredients and cause an imbalance in compost.
Steps to compost the kitchen waste
01st Step: Identify the composting spot. Composting can be done at various places for instant garden, kitchen, and balcony. You can select an outdoor to compost materials.
02nd Step: Separate the esculent kitchen waste like vegetable peels, fruit peels in one container and fill another container with dry organic matter such as dry leaves, sawdust.
03rd Step: Take a large pot or a bucket and drill several holes around the container at different levels to enter the air.
04th Step: Line the bottom with a layer of soil.
05th Step: Start adding food waste in layers alternating wet waste with dry waste. Maintain dry waste and wet waste balance.
06th Step: Cover the container with a plastic sheet or a plank of wood to help retain moisture and heat.
Every few days give a quick turn by using a rake and aeration cause to decompose the waste successfully. Within 2-3 months, the ingredients start forming compost and it is dark brown, dry and, smelling of earth.
Methods of composting
The method you select for composting your kitchen waste, depends on the space you have available and the time you want to devote to this task.
- Passive composting or piling: simply it can be defined as stacking the materials and after letting them decompose naturally. This method is low cost and easy but it takes much time to process and may result in objectionable odor.
- Pit composting: simply dig a hole 12 to 14 inches deep and bury your leftovers and do this in layers of green and then brown.
- Compost tumbler: the most efficient bin method. In here no need to digging or turning. Simply give a spin every few days.
- DIY compost bin: low-cost method and you can make a bin of your own by using a large bucket.
- Standard compost bin: you can buy this type of bin but it is difficult to turn the compost therefore it takes several months to process.
Issues and Suggestions related to the composting process
Objectionable odors from compost pile, this is the one of the main problem that you have to face when composting in the garden and it causes to generate the unpleasant condition. To eliminate this, make sure you do not put bones or meat scraps into the compost and add carbon-rich elements to your pile. Try to balance the Carbon and Nitrogen ratio properly.
Another problem is flying insects attract to the compost pile. Small fruit peels have naturally attracted these kinds of insects and discourage them by covering these peels. Furthermore, adding lime or calcium, also discourage them.
Finally composting the kitchen waste is the best solution for the garbage problem and it is the better supplement for your plants to grow happy and healthy.
